Partial dentures

What is a partial denture?

Partial dentures are removable prosthetic appliances that replace missing teeth.
They are used when few teeth are left in the mouth.
They usually have a metal framework, pink acrylic base and acrylic teeth and attach to the teeth with clasps or precision attachments.

How should I take care of my partial dentures?

Rinse your mouth and dentures with plenty of water after each meal.

Dentures should be cleaned outside the mouth with mild soap and a denture brush.
Do not use common toothpaste or any abrasive powder because they could scratch the denture surface.

Clean the outer surface of the dentures and the teeth.
Clean the inner surface.
Clean the metal framework.

It is advisable to brush your dentures in a wash basin filled with a little water to avoid accidental breaking.
You may also put some cloth or tissue under the dentures.

Brush your teeth and gums at least twice a day, as there is an increased risk for dental decay and periodontal disease.

Leave the brush to air dry.

Use partial denture cleansing tablets at least three times a week and follow the product instructions.

Rinse thoroughly with water before putting the dentures back in the mouth.

Remove your dentures and leave them air-dry at night.

If you need to carry your partial dentures put them in special storage boxes

Visit your dentist at least once a year to check your dentures, teeth and gums.

Don’t place your dentures in boiling water.
Don’t place your partial dentures in sodium hypochlorite cleansers.

How long does it take to fabricate a partial denture?

The time required to fabricate a partial denture is normally two to three weeks.

What should I expect after placing new partial dentures?

It takes a little time to become accustomed to new partial dentures. The tongue may need some time to adjust while speaking, but problems will decrease over time. Irritation and soreness may occur, and the dentist will make some adjustments.
The dentist will show you how to insert and remove your partial denture.
Never try to insert it by biting down or remove it with your tongue.

How many times should I visit the dentist for adjustments?

There is no general rule and it depends on each case.
You may need one to three appointments for adjustments.

Will everyone know that I am wearing partial dentures?

With the proper design, your partial dentures will look natural.
Sometimes some of the clasps may show when you smile.

Can I always wear my partial dentures?

It is recommended to take out the partial dentures at night to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

How often should I visit my dentist?

Poor fitting dentures may damage your teeth and gums.

If a natural tooth is extracted, do I need to have a new denture made?
